Zodiac Killer Identified: Harden's Inconsistencies

CRACKING THE CODE Harden's effort comes to life in movie 'Zodiac' By LESLIE ESCOBAR The Salinas Californian When Don Harden first learned of a mysterious cryptogram that might reveal the identity of a serial killer in the Bay Area, he wasn't particularly interested in tackling its challenge. The year was 1969, and Harden's wife at the time, Betty, had spotted the infamous "Zodiac Killer" puzzle in the San Francisco Chronicle. She tried to persuade Don, a history and economics teacher at North Salinas High School, to help her solve it. Don Harden declined, but not for long. "She didn't know what the heck she was doing," Harden recalled earlier this month from his home of six years in Fountain Hills, Ariz. "So finally, to get her off my back, I said, 'OK, let me see it.' " Just past midnight on Aug. 8 - after five days of nearly nonstop work in their Chestnut Street home in North Salinas -Harden cracked the code. But the author of the code, a Northern California serial murderer dubbed the Zodiac Killer, was never found. Now, almost 40 years after Harden's eureka moment, the Zodiac Killer is back - this time as portrayed in a film, "Zodiac," set for release March 2. The movie details how the Zodiac Killer taunted police and the press with letters and phone calls in which he claimed responsibility for murders throughout the Bay Area. He's thought to have killed at least five people between December 1968 and October 1969. On July 31, 1969, the killer sent three letters to the Chronicle, the Vallejo Times-Herald and the San Francisco Examiner, according to various Web sites devoted to the case, which became one of California's most followed serial-killer sagas of the 1960s. The author took credit for three murders and included with each letter a part of a cryptogram. The writer said that when solved, the cryptogram would include his identity. In an article published in The Salinas Californian on Aug. 9, 1969, Harden said the writer of the code used 29 different symbols in the message and 12 characters for the letter E alone. Adding to the confusion was the fact that the spelling was "rather poor and in some places he had made errors in the use of his own cipher," Harden said in that story. According to the 1969 article, the message read, "I like killing people because it is so much fun. It is more fun than killing wild game in the forrest (sic). When I die I will be reborn in paradise and all I have killed will become my slaves. I will not give you my name because you will try to slow down or stop my collecting of slaves." After decoding the message, Harden said he sent it to the Chronicle, who then forwarded it to investigators of the case. "I got it done, sent it in, they checked it out and that was it," he said. "So I thought, 'Well, I didn't want to get too much attention.'" While the Zodiac Killer sent more cryptograms to newspapers in subsequent years, only the first set was ever solved. Harden, now 78, said while local attention was minimal, but his students at North Salinas High were enthusiastic about his role in the case. "My class said, 'Come on, tell us about it,'" Harden said. "So, I had to take one day, and we didn't do any work in class and I basically broke down the code." Big-name stars Don and Betty Harden divorced in the 1980s. Don Harden married his new wife, Dee, 10 years ago. Harden said he became aware a movie was being made after receiving a call from Paramount Pictures, the distributor of "Zodiac," last year. David Fincher, director of "Se7en" and "Fight Club," is directing the movie. It stars Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo and Jake Gyllenhaal. According to the official Web site for "Zodiac," the movie follows four men whose "lives and careers are built and destroyed by the endless trail of clues." Two sources close to Paramount said the characters of Harden and ex-wife Betty appear in "Zodiac." And according to The Internet Movie Database, actress Gloria Grant plays Betty Harden, who died several years ago. Grant had a small role in the 2005 film "Rumor Has It." Don Harden's name doesn't appear on IMDB's cast list for the film. Dee Harden calls her husband's accomplishment "amazing" and said the couple are planning to see "Zodiac." "Oh, of course we will," she said. "We're big movie buffs." Don Harden, however, said he prefers a sense of anonymity. "I think there might be a few people I told," he said. "But I didn't want people to think that's the only thing I ever did in my life."
ZODIAC KILLER IDENTIFIED: Meeting and Interviews.

Part 10 of meeting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soYIxV1TkSQ&t=522s You have Don Harden distancing himself from the cipher because he was the Zodiac. He said Bettye spotted the code and tried to get him to help her with it. He then said he agreed to help which makes it look like he couldn't be Zodiac when actually he was. Don's daughter says Don was the one to start on the cipher and her mother joined in 2-3 hours later and asked him what he was doing. Zodiac Killer Identified, how serious Don was about solving the code

09:20
Someone at NSHS thought Don was Zodiac from the questions that were asked of him. Please see following link. http://zodiackillerciphers.com/images/salinas-doubtful.jpg Zodiac Identified: His name was Donald Gene Harden. His full identity was found hidden in the 408 cipher and Zodiac did say it was in there. The symbol that he sent (with 4 dots around it) which represents the 4 crime scenes, connects all 4 crime scene areas to Salinas Ca where he lived at the time of these crimes. He matches both sketches, with and without glasses. The # 408 ,which was the number of characters in Zodiac's first code, was also Don's area code. The 408 cipher had 54 unique symbols,Harden's address was #54 at that time in 1969.The Melvin Belli meeting address that Zodiac gave was 6726 St Vincent De Paul Thrift Shop. Harden's last 4 digits of his phone # back then were 6726 exactly. His initials DH were hidden in the bus bomb diagram's .Don's zodiac sign was Pisces, so it fits with the water theory. Don's height was in the 5 8" and 5 10" description range ,like officer Don Fouke described,Don was 5 10" with a 10 1/2 shoe like prints found at LB. Don Fouke got the best look at Zodiac.Harden was in the age range that Fouke described as 40-45. Harden was 41. He even pretended to be a hoaxer and really did call the Jim Dunbar show knowing they would dismiss him as a hoaxer for acting stupid like he didn't know what he was talking about. His wife Bettye wrote a partial confession in Robert Graysmith's Zodiac (which was a Salinas Library book) that read: I started the Zodiac case and ended it,the last half of this book is theory. When I write the true ending,it will shake the earth! Bettye Harden - Bettye Harden letter B from Graysmith's book, matches letter B in 1974 Badlands letter, same year as the Exorcist letter, see link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToBOjItzRkI Zodiac sent the 1971 Pines card with the advertisement for the new Forest Pines condominiums in Lake Tahoe. Donald Harden was in the real estate condominium business. He had ties with Lake Tahoe. Harden tied to Lake Tahoe ,News article can be seen here:http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2245&dat=19830121&id=HYs1AAAAIBAJ&sjid=RDIHAAAAIBAJ&pg=4854,2166953
The Confession, Bettye Harden Partial Confession in Graysmith's Zodiac Killer Book.

Just the fact alone of Harden never being mentioned by Zodiac for solving the code, puts suspicion on Harden being Zodiac ,which nobody sees .People say you are looney for thinking the Harden's were involved, but yet again, they can't prove they aren't and won't even try to disprove because they can't. The letter B in the word Bettye matches with Zodiac's May 8th 1974 Citizen letter. This book was from the Salina's library and was sold a few years back on Ebay. Clearly, both letter B's are written by the same hand, and remember, these examples were written many years apart. This is my story, I started the Zodiac case and ended it. The last half of this book is theory, when I write the true ending,it will shake the earth! Bettye Harden This author use to drive down to Salinas to pick our brains-all we told him was already public news that made headlines 5 inches long -our code solving,Bettye Here is a comment from a guy who met Bettye Harden. SALINAS, CA May 1990 I love this photo and was so excited to meet Bettye. A friend called me on this day when I was in town visiting family and she suggested we go see her friend Bettye. She was the amazing person who actually solved ***CRACKED** * the cryptogram that the Zodiac Killer used to torment the media with during the 70s. She showed us her scrapbooks and told us about how she worked w/ the FBI...she was a puzzler...and she had the time to sit at her table to dissect the letters from the Zodiac and break his code...something no other cypher could do. That isn't what Don says: After the Hardens' decryption was published, they became overnight celebrities, something they never anticipated. Then they received a call from the FBI. They were right. "I don't know what my ex-wife told them. I wasn't there. All I know is we never heard from them again," he adds. "We didn't realize the media fallout that would follow. I was interviewed on America's Most Wanted for about half a second. But my ex-wife got so paranoid that every time a reporter would come by she'd start worrying the killer was going to find us. I had to buy a gun and put it under the bed. I never had a gun before and I never used it. I just bought it to calm her down. I got rid of it a couple of years later." Some people have thought these message were done by somebody pretending to be Bettye ,or written by Zodiac himself to frame Bettye. These people who have thought this crap up shouldn't be looking into the Zodiac case. If somebody wanted to write these message's to frame a good suspect ,they would have done it with Arthur Leigh Allen,or other Zodiac suspects that are out there, not Bettye. People just don't want to believe that this is Bettye's writing because it is a confession to who was behind the Zodiac crimes. It would be a damn shame if this book doesn't get checked out by the FBI. This book probably had fingerprints and palm prints, which are probably of no use by now with people going through the pages looking at the book. Don Harden solved his own 408 cipher. Zodiac said he claimed 7 killed victims between dec-oct when there was only 5, He lied about august killings which is the 8th month. Zodiac told belli to meet him at 6726 St Vincent De Paul Thrift Shop. Zodiac gave his whole phone number 408-758-6726 Let it be noted that Donald Harden, solver of the Zodiac 408 code (that all experts couldn't solve) has too many links to these crimes. His phone area code was 408 when he solved the code ,and his last 4 digits of his phone number were 6726,same as the Melvin Belli meeting address. His full identity was found hidden in the 408 cipher, and the symbol that he sent connects all 4 crime scene areas to Salinas Ca where he lived at the time of these crimes. The 408 cipher had 54 unique symbols,Harden's address was #54 at that time in 1969. His initials DH were hidden in the bus bomb diagram.

Zodiac Killer Identified, Proof 340 is fake and Harden was the mastermind.

The red box characters in the 408 cipher that Don Harden solved are exactly the same red box characters in the 340 .They are in the same positions as the 340. The characters in green boxes in the 408 were added to the 340. The 34o was clearly made up from the 408. The main goal for Zodiac's/Harden's 408 cipher was to get in there and solve it himself making fools out the anyone who believed it, and still believe it. The 340 cipher was made so it wouldn't draw suspicion back to him,Harden/Zodiac.He also did go on the Jim Dunbar show, that was Harden's voice. Nancy Slover,Bryan Hartnell and David Slaight didn't recognize the voice because Zodiac/Harden disguised his voice. He played a dumb hoaxer knowing they wouldn't think it was actually him. It is Harden's voice on that show. Harden said in a 2007 interview that shortly after solving the 408,his wife received a call from the FBI and he doesn't know what was said because he wasn't home at the time. He said that they never heard from the FBI again. Then in another 2007 interview,Harden said the FBI were in his living room asking for help with the 340 cipher and he refused to work with them. He knew it was his code and that it was fake. He surely kept up doing his crossword puzzles over the years, but refused to help with the 340.He said that one cipher was enough. He also said in that 2nd interview that the 340 was fake, and people shouldn't waste their time with it. The main thing was the pre planned target areas. He chose these areas deliberately. See video with the street names where Harden lived. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjmNuB00kfM

Zodiac Killer

42:39
The Zodiac Killer was a serial killer who operated in northern California in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The killer's identity remains unknown. The Zodiac murdered victims in Benicia, Vallejo, Lake Berryessa, and San Francisco between December 1968 and October 1969. Four men and three women between the ages of 16 and 29 were targeted. The killer originated the name "Zodiac" in a series of taunting letters sent to the local Bay Area press. These letters included four cryptograms . Of the four cryptograms sent, only one has been definitively solved. This video targeted to blind users. Attribution: Article text available under CC-BY-SA Public domain image source in video
