DEF CON 23 - Crypto and Privacy Village - Robert Olson - Teaching Privacy Using Red Team Strategies
"Teaching Privacy Using Red Team Strategies: An Undergraduate General Education Curriculum" Robert Olson (nerdprof) Privacy is very important concept that, unfortunately, many undergraduate students don’t encounter frequently in their chosen courses of study. Often, when it is discussed, it’s discussed using a deeply philosophical approach to which students may have a difficult time connecting. This approach also often fails to connect privacy with many of the important technical nuances that can have a significant impact on modern privacy debates. This talk will discuss an alternative approach used in a Spring 2015 undergraduate general education course titled Hacking, Surveillance, and Privacy. The goal of this class was to take a technical approach to teaching privacy concepts in order to ensure students would understand the technical details of modern privacy debates in an addition to the philosophical concepts. Students were given hands-on experiences with penetration testing tools so that they might better understand how computer security impacts privacy while seeing first-hand how their privacy might be violated. Students were exposed to data-mining techniques so that they might understand the privacy implications of large-scale data collection. Finally, students were exposed to privacy tools so that they might understand the challenges in protecting one’s privacy against modern threats. Robert Olson is currently an instructor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences at the State University of New York at Fredonia, where he teaches courses in security, data mining, and programming. He holds two graduate degrees in Interdisciplinary Studies (Cognitive Science) and Management Information Systems as well as several professional certifications. He has spoken at the Def Con 22 Crypto / Privacy Village, BSides Rochester, and several academic conferences. Most recently, his research has been focused on designing penetration testing agents and exploring new ideas in privacy protecting network protocols.

CPAR 4-18-16: Yiannis Aloimonos
The Syntax of action: A key to intelligent robots Apr 18, 2016, 4-5pm, 250 SDH, Yiannis Aloimonos, University of Maryland, College Par Abstract Humanoid robots will need to learn the actions that humans perform. They will need to recognize these actions when they see them and they will need to perform these actions themselves. In this presentation, it is proposed that this learning task can be achieved using the manipulation grammar. Context-free grammars have been in fashion in linguistics because they provide a simple and precise mechanism for describing the methods by which phrases in some natural language are built from smaller blocks. Similarly, for manipulation actions, every complex activity is built from smaller blocks involving hands and their movements, as well as objects, tools and the monitoring of their state. Thus, interpreting a seen action is like understanding language, and executing an action from knowledge in memory is like producing language. Several experiments will be shown interpreting human actions in the arts and crafts or assembly domain, through a parsing of the visual input, on the basis of the manipulation grammar. This parsing, in order to be realized, requires a network of visual processes that attend to objects and tools, segment them and recognize them, track the moving objects and hands, and monitor the state of objects to calculate goal completion. These processes will also be explained in a new cognitive architecture called the Cognitive Dialogue and we will conclude with demonstrations of robots learning how to perform tasks by watching videos of relevant human activities. Bio: Yiannis Aloimonos is Professor of Computational Vision and Intelligence at the Department of Computer Science, University of Maryland, College Park, and the Director of the Computer Vision Laboratory at the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS). He is also affiliated with the Institute for Systems Research and the Neural and Cognitive Science Program. He was born in Sparta, Greece and studied Mathematics in Athens and Computer Science at the University of Rochester, NY (PhD 1990). He is interested in Active Perception and the modeling of vision as an active, dynamic process for real time robotic systems. For the past five years he has been working on bridging signals and symbols, specifically on the relationship of vision to reasoning, action and language.

NYSDEC - Audit Trip to Long Island NY, July 19 & 20, 2004
This was another Audit Trip I took during the summer of 2004. During this audit trip, we were doing Private Monitoring at Brookhaven Landfill on Long Island. Besides the monitoring we did for the NYS Air monitoring system we also did quality assurance and audits for private monitoring systems. A number of facilities in NYS are required to have air monitoring systems due to the pollutants they give off. There is a landfill near Niagara Falls NY that also had a private monitoring system; Kodak Park in Rochester NY also; Suffolk County did private monitoring; we did work for SUNY Albany's Atmospheric Sciences Research Center, Brookhaven Laboratories, New York University, and others. During this overnight audit trip, we stayed in a hotel in Ronkonkoma NY.

It is the first decentralized digital currency, as the system works without a central bank or single administrator. The network is peer-to-peer and transactions take place between users directly through the use of cryptography, without an intermediary.:4 These transactions are verified by network nodes and recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain. Bitcoin was invented by an unknown person or group of people under the name Satoshi Nakamoto[ and released as open-source software in 2009. Bitcoins are created as a reward for a process known as mining. They can be exchanged for other currencies, products, and services. As of February 2015, over 100,000 merchants and vendors accepted bitcoin as payment. Research produced by the University of Cambridge estimates that in 2017, there are 2.9 to 5.8 million unique users using a cryptocurrency wallet, most of them using bitcoin. On 18 August 2008, the domain name "bitcoin.org" was registered. In November that year, a link to a paper authored by Satoshi Nakamoto titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System was posted to a cryptography mailing list. Nakamoto implemented the bitcoin software as open source code and released it in January 2009. The identity of Nakamoto remains unknown. In January 2009, the bitcoin network came into existence after Satoshi Nakamoto mined the first ever block on the chain, known as the genesis block, for a reward of 50 bitcoins. Embedded in the coinbase of this block was the following text: The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks. This note has been interpreted as both a timestamp of the genesis date and a derisive comment on the instability caused by fractional-reserve banking. One of the first supporters, adopters, and contributors to bitcoin was the receiver of the first bitcoin transaction, programmer Hal Finney. Finney downloaded the bitcoin software the day it was released, and received 10 bitcoins from Nakamoto in the world's first bitcoin transaction. Other early supporters were Wei Dai, creator of bitcoin predecessor b-money, and Nick Szabo, creator of bitcoin predecessor bit gold. In the early days, Nakamoto is estimated to have mined 1 million bitcoins. In 2010, Nakamoto handed the network alert key and control of the Bitcoin Core code repository over to Gavin Andresen, who later became lead developer at the Bitcoin Foundation. Nakamoto subsequently disappeared from any involvement in bitcoin. Andresen stated he then sought to decentralize control, saying: "As soon as Satoshi stepped back and threw the project onto my shoulders, one of the first things I did was try to decentralize that. So, if I get hit by a bus, it would be clear that the project would go on." This left opportunity for controversy to develop over the future development path of bitcoin. The value of the first bitcoin transactions was negotiated by individuals on the bitcointalk forums with one notable transaction of 10,000 BTC used to indirectly purchase two pizzas delivered by Papa John's. On 6 August 2010, a major vulnerability in the bitcoin protocol was spotted. Transactions were not properly verified before they were included in the blockchain, which let users bypass bitcoin's economic restrictions and create an indefinite number of bitcoins. On 15 August, the vulnerability was exploited; over 184 billion bitcoins were generated in a single transaction, and sent to two addresses on the network. Within hours, the transaction was spotted and erased from the transaction log after the bug was fixed and the network forked to an updated version of the bitcoin protocol. On 1 August 2017, a hard fork of bitcoin was created, known as Bitcoin Cash. Bitcoin Cash has a larger blocksize limit and had an identical blockchain at the time of fork. Boston BSides - Ryan Nolette - Protect Against CryptoLocker Ransomware
Recently, attackers employing a CryptoLocker variant have been removing volume shadow copies on systems, disallowing the users from restoring those files and then encrypting the files for ransom. If a user cannot recover from backups, he/she is at the attacker’s mercy. In this technical session, we’ll discuss the ins and outs of shadow copies, reveal how attackers are using them to encrypt files for ransom and then discuss ways you can quickly, and easily, detect and respond to these kinds of attacks. Ryan Nolette, is Senior Threat Researcher at Bit9 + Carbon Black and draws from more than decade of intense and active Incident Response (IR), Threat Research, and IT experience to add a unique perspective of technical expertise and strategic vision to Bit9 + Carbon Black. Prior to joining Bit9, he was a Technology Risk Analyst for Fidelity Investments, where he was the malware subject matter expert for their Cyber Security Group and focused on signature verification and placement for all IPS across the world, and provided non-signature based malware detection and prevention through manual auditing and automated tools he wrote. Prior to Fidelity Investments, he was an MSS Analyst at SecureWorks. As a Security Response Specialist on the Security Response Team, he aided in the management and monitoring of client intrusion detection devices and log management devices as well as researched the latest security threats and vulnerabilities to perform deep network and packet analysis to identify client security breaches. Prior to Secureworks, he was a “jack of all trades” for Crossbeam Systems. Primarily working as a Security System Administrator, he focused on IPS, firewall, and AV systems and also worked in the SQA lab as a performance product tester, and in manufacturing where he helped build the hardware. He was also a System Administrator and Test Engineer for Vardata, where he built and maintained a multi-server network and performance tested all network, security, and telecommunications equipment that Vardata sold. What Are Bitcoins? Max Keiser On Bitcoins Video Pt 2
What Are Bitcoins? Max Keiser On Bitcoins - How To Win FREE Bitcoins here: http://win-free-bitcoins.com - Discover the power of Bitcoin gifting and receive free BitCoins. What Are Bitcoins? TRANSACTIONS: Integral to Bitcoin is a public transaction ledger and log known as the blockchain, which shows who owns how many bitcoins currently and records the participants in all prior transactions as well. By keeping a record of all transactions, the blockchain prevents double-spending (copying one bitcoin and spending it in multiple different places) because the record shows that once a bitcoin has been spent, the previous owner no longer controls it. The blockchain is maintained not by a central body but by a distributed network of computers that run a program to solve cryptographic puzzles relating to information in the blockchain. Users who devote computing power to maintaining the blockchain this way are called "miners" because they are awarded in bitcoin when they are first to solve such puzzles—mining is how new bitcoins are generated. The mathematical calculations performed by miners' computers serve to verify that each transaction is valid and add the information to the blockchain. As more bitcoins come into circulation, the puzzles involved in mining them become increasingly difficult, and the rewards are halved at regular intervals, until 21 million bitcoins have been created and production stops. As Bitcoin achieves wider recognition and more people compete to mine the coins, competition for the limited number of bitcoins awarded for solving the cryptographic puzzles becomes more steep and more powerful computers are needed in order to compete—a fact which has spawned a technology boom in sales of Bitcoin mining technology. Anonymity Bitcoin uses cryptography for digital signatures but not for encryption. Bitcoin is anonymous in that it's possible though difficult to associate Bitcoin transactions with real-life identities. In addition, Bitcoin intermediaries such as exchanges are required by law in many jurisdictions to collect personal customer data. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin http://www.youtube.com/user/bitcoinmininghq Don't forget to subscribe to our channel for latest BTC updates: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=bitcoinmininghq http://youtu.be/ZE050MEEcJA What Are Bitcoins?
