How Computers Compress Text: Huffman Coding and Huffman Trees

Computers store text (or, at least, English text) as eight bits per character. There are plenty of more efficient ways that could work: so why don't we use them? And how can we fit more text into less space? Let's talk about Huffman coding, Huffman trees, and Will Smith. FILM DESCRIPTION: Dan Brown's controversial best-selling novel about a powerful secret that's been kept under wraps for thousands of years comes to the screen in this suspense thriller from director Ron Howard. The stately silence of Paris' Louvre museum is broken when one of the gallery's leading curators is found dead on the grounds, with strange symbols carved into his body and left around the spot where he died. Hoping to learn the significance of the symbols, police bring in Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), a gifted cryptographer who is also the victim's granddaughter. Needing help, Sophie calls on Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks), a leading symbologist from the United States. As Sophie and Robert dig deeper into the case, they discover the victim's involvement in the Priory of Sion, a secret society whose members have been privy to forbidden knowledge dating back to the birth of Christianity. In their search, Sophie and Robert happen upon evidence that could lead to the final resting place of the Holy Grail, while members of the priory and an underground Catholic society known as Opus Dei give chase, determined to prevent them from sharing their greatest secrets with the world. Also starring Ian McKellen, Jean Reno, and Alfred Molina, The Da Vinci Code was shot on location in France and the United Kingdom; the Louvre allowed the producers to film at the famous museum, but scenes taking place at Westminster Abbey had to filmed elsewhere when church officials declined permission. Double Slit Experiment explained! by Jim Al-Khalili

09:08
"If you can explain this using common sense and logic, do let me know, because there is a Nobel Prize for you.." Professor Jim Al-Khalili explains the experiment that reveals the "central mystery of quantum mechanics" - the double slit experiment. Watch the full lecture here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwgQVZju1ZM Sometimes called the "two-slit" or "Young's" experiment, it demonstrates that matter and energy can display the characteristics of both waves and particles, establishing the principle known as wave-particle duality. Furthermore, it questions the role of the observer in the outcome of events and demonstrates the fundamental limitation of an observer to predict experimental results. For this reason, Richard Feynman called it "a phenomenon which is impossible ... to explain in any classical way, and which has in it the heart of quantum mechanics. In reality, it contains the only mystery [of quantum mechanics]," (see more at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-slit_experiment). Prof. Joseph Conlon: Making Light from the Dark Universe

01:00:25
"This talk is about searches for dark stuff: dark matter and dark radiation. Axions are possible new particles beyond the Standard Model which are good candidates for this dark stuff. Axions turn into photons within magnetic field and this talk will give some examples of this, crossing from string theory to extra dimensions to X-ray astronomy to the power spectra of the magnetic field within galaxy clusters." Dr Joseph Conlon is a string theorist from Oxford. He was awarded his first degree (in Mathematics) from Reading when he was only 18 years old. He then did Natural Sciences at Cambridge, where he was initially too young to enter the first time he applied to university. He was recently awarded the 2014 Oxford University Student Union 'Outstanding tutor' Award for Mathematical, Physical and Life Sciences. --------- CUPS - Cambridge University Physics Society We are a student-run university society organising scientific talks and other events for our members and public. The Map of Mathematics

11:06
The entire field of mathematics summarised in a single map! This shows how pure mathematics and applied mathematics relate to each other and all of the sub-topics they are made from. If you would like to buy a poster of this map, they are available here: http://www.redbubble.com/people/dominicwalliman/works/25095968-the-map-of-mathematics I have also made a version available for educational use which you can find here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/95869671@N08/32264483720/in/dateposted-public/ To err is to human, and I human a lot. I always try my best to be as correct as possible, but unfortunately I make mistakes. This is the errata where I correct my silly mistakes. My goal is to one day do a video with no errors! 1. The number one is not a prime number. The definition of a prime number is a number can be divided evenly only by 1, or itself. And it must be a whole number GREATER than 1. (This last bit is the bit I forgot). 2. In the trigonometry section I drew cos(theta) = opposite / adjacent. This is the kind of thing you learn in high school and guess what. I got it wrong! Dummy. It should be cos(theta) = adjacent / hypotenuse. 3. My drawing of dice is slightly wrong. Most dice have their opposite sides adding up to 7, so when I drew 3 and 4 next to each other that is incorrect. 4. I said that the Gödel Incompleteness Theorems implied that mathematics is made up by humans, but that is wrong, just ignore that statement. I have learned more about it now, here is a good video explaining it: https://youtu.be/O4ndIDcDSGc 5. In the animation about imaginary numbers I drew the real axis as vertical and the imaginary axis as horizontal which is opposite to the conventional way it is done. Thanks so much to my supporters on Patreon. I hope to make money from my videos one day, but I’m not there yet! Quantum Computing for Computer Scientists

This talk discards hand-wavy pop-science metaphors and answers a simple question: from a computer science perspective, how can a quantum computer outperform a classical computer? Attendees will learn the following: - Representing computation with basic linear algebra (matrices and vectors) - The computational workings of qbits, superposition, and quantum logic gates - Solving the Deutsch oracle problem: the simplest problem where a quantum computer outperforms classical methods - Bonus topics: quantum entanglement and teleportation The talk concludes with a live demonstration of quantum entanglement on a real-world quantum computer, and a demo of the Deutsch oracle problem implemented in Q# with the Microsoft Quantum Development Kit. This talk assumes no prerequisite knowledge, although comfort with basic linear algebra (matrices, vectors, matrix multiplication) will ease understanding. REALITY LOST Excerpt 2. Artur Ekert on David Bohm.

01:58
SYNOPSIS At the beginning of the 20th Century, a major shift took place in science. Scientists started doing experiments with unprecedented precision -- fiddling with single particles, atoms, and electrons. And they got bewildered. Small objects seemed to have sort of fuzzy properties. What's more, the very act of observing them, of measuring them, seemed to bring them to life, excavate them from a vague domain. The equations of quantum mechanics were beautiful. They generated astonishingly correct answers for mind-boggling questions about the exotic micro world. But there was a price to pay. Objective reality had to go. Was it regained? --------------------------------------------- SCIENTISTS ON SCREEN Dagomir Kaszlikowski Physicist, theorist, Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore Artur Ekert Physicist, theorist, director of Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore; Professor of Quantum Physics, Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford Valerio Scarani Physicist, theorist, Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore Christian Kurtsiefer Physicist, experimentalist, Centre for Quantum Technologies, National University of Singapore Charles Bennett Physicist, information theorist and IBM Fellow at IBM Research. Hackers & Cyber Attacks: Crash Course Computer Science #32

11:53
Today we're going to talk about hackers and their strategies for breaking into computer systems. Now, not all hackers are are malicious cybercriminals intent on stealing your data (these people are known as Black Hats). There are also White Hats who hunt for bugs, close security holes, and perform security evaluations for companies. And there are a lot of different motivations for hackers—sometimes just amusement or curiosity, sometimes for money, and sometimes to promote social or political goals. Regardless, we're not going to teach you how to become a hacker in this episode but we are going to walk you through some of the strategies hackers use to gain access to your devices, so you can be better prepared to keep your data safe. *CORRECTION* AT 7:40 "whatever" should not have a leading ' The correct username field should be: whatever’; DROP TABLE users; Produced in collaboration with PBS Digital Studios: http://youtube.com/pbsdigitalstudios Want to know more about Carrie Anne? https://about.me/carrieannephilbin The Latest from PBS Digital Studios: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL1mtdjDVOoOqJzeaJAV15Tq0tZ1vKj7ZV Want to find Crash Course elsewhere on the internet? 5 Reasons Why I Love Cryptography By Susan Freed In Atlanta

03:12
Five Reasons Why I Love Cryptography http://iheartsusanfreed.com For years, I didn't know anything about cryptography. I'd heard the term, but I didn't know what it meant, or what the practice involved. Still, when I got the chance to study cryptography, I took it, and my life has been richer and more interesting as a result. Cryptography is essentially the study of codes, and learning more about it can benefit your life in all kinds of ways. Below, you'll find five of the reasons I love cryptography. If you learn more about it, there's a good change you'll wind up loving cryptography as much as I do. 1. It makes life more interesting Ever since I started studying cryptography, I've begun to see codes and hidden messages in everything. When I read a letter or look at a sign, I automatically start making connections with my mind. There probably aren't any hidden messages in road signs, but that doesn't matter! Thinking about those things makes my life a lot more interesting, and a lot more fun. 2. It's made me smarter Cryptography is a great way to train your mind and make it sharper than ever before. It helps to improve your concentration as well as your wit. Since I started studying cryptography, I get better scores on tests, and have an easier time studying for classes at school. It's really strengthened my mind. 3. It's given me a more well-rounded education Because of my interest in cryptography, I've studied a number of other subjects. It's given me reason to improve my math and science skills, and to study all kinds of history. I'm more motivated to learn than ever before, and that's helped to educate me in some very interesting ways. Cryptography has given me a better education than I ever would have had without it. I feel like I have little bits of knowledge in all kinds of subjects, and that's really exciting. 4. It's helped me meet some amazing people Because of my passion for cryptography, I've made connections and met people from all over the world. Many of these people are just as passionate about cryptography as I am, and many of them are amazing. The field of cryptography attracts some fascinating and brilliant people. I'm grateful to have met all of them, and I'm very glad that it was cryptography that managed to bring us together. 5. It's a ton of fun! While all of the benefits above are nice, the real reason I love cryptography is that it's fun. No TV show or movie is as exciting as solving a mystery or cracking a puzzle on your own. Cryptography isn't an expensive hobby, but it's definitely an entertaining one. Every day, I always have something interesting to do, and I owe that to cryptography. I highly recommend that everyone learns more about cryptography. It's amazing for more than five reasons, and if you look into it, you'll probably love it too. Cryptography is an absolutely incredible hobby. http://youtu.be/TXplWR7Jr-E http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptography

Schrödinger's cat - WWW.OLOSCIENCE.COM

02:04
Schrödinger's cat, often described as a paradox, is a thought experiment devised by Erwin Schrödinger. It attempts to illustrate what he saw as the problems of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics when it is applied beyond just atomic or subatomic systems. The concept of superposition, one of the strangest in quantum mechanics, helped provoke Schrödinger's conjecture. Broadly stated, the superposition is the combination of all the possible positions of a subatomic particle. The Copenhagen interpretation implies that the superposition only undergoes collapse into a definite state at the exact moment of quantum measurement. Schrödinger's mind-game was meant to criticize the strangeness of this. Influenced by a suggestion of Albert Einstein, Schrödinger extrapolated the concept to a larger scale. He proposed a scenario with a cat in a sealed box, where the cat's life or death was dependent on the state of a subatomic particle. According to Schrödinger, the Copenhagen interpretation implies that the cat remains both alive and dead until the box is opened. Schrödinger did not wish to promote the idea of dead-and-alive cats as a serious possibility; quite the reverse: the thought experiment serves to illustrate the bizarreness of quantum mechanics and the mathematics necessary to describe quantum states. Several interpretations of quantum mechanics have been put forward in an attempt to resolve the paradox. How they treat it is often used as a way of illustrating and comparing their particular features, strengths and weaknesses.

Tarik Aougab - Effectivizing the geometry of combinatorial complexes

56:20
Georgia Topology Conference 2014 The curve, arc, pants and marking complexes of a surface S have been essential combinatorial tools for analyzing the mapping class group, the geometry of hyperbolic 3-manifolds and of Teichmuller space, the topology of Heegaard splittings and more. But in general, little is known about how the geometry of these complexes depend on the topology of the underlying surface S, and this limits our ability to use these tools to make "effective" statements about 3-manifolds. In this talk, I will survey what is known, some questions that remain, and some recent partial progress towards a more complete understanding of this dependence. Some of this is joint work with Samuel Taylor and Richard Webb.
